Ball-playing goalkeepers are the hallmark of the modern game.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Sipho Chaine has been on the receiving end of some unfriendly gestures regarding how he uses the ball at his feet.
Pirates fans have questioned whether Chaine takes too long to distribute the ball, putting himself and his defenders under pressure.
Buccaneers coach, Jose Riveiro has stood up for his goalkeeper, telling TimesLive that any accusations should be levelled at him instead.
Riveiro explained that the style of play is something they have worked on and that he trusts his shot-stopper to help create the numerical advantage needed when playing out from the back.
“So we have an advantage of one more player. From there it's about the opponent on how many players they're going to push forward to press.” elaborated Riveiro, as he has done for several months.
The Pirates boss reminded the supporters not to put unnecessary pressure on the players, given the intensity of league and cup encounters.
“Supporters need to understand that in that moment it's not a good idea to stress the goalkeeper because he has to make a crucial decision.” he said.
Chaine has made himself a hero in the eyes of the Pirates faithful. He made three saves in the MTN8 final to earn the Bucs back-to-back MTN8 titles.
Speaking after the final, Chaine was humble in his comments, as reported by KickOff:
“Where can I start? I said earlier that it’s by the grace of God that I’m here, where no one expected me to be where I am today. When I was just a small boy from Bloemfontein, who started off very far you know.”
