Barcelona’s rumoured reunion with Lionel Messi seems to have hit a roadblock according to the latest statement from Inter Miami manager, Tata Martino.
The Florida franchise's hopes of reaching the MLS playoffs came to a dead end after the 1-0 loss at home to Cincinnati on Saturday night, sparking speculations of Messi’s return to the Catalan giants.
According to Football Espana, Martino has downplayed the chances of the Argentina superstar’s move back to Barcelona even though the 36-year-old faces almost four months out of action.
"Is he going for fun? Maybe he’s going to visit Barcelona. Other than that, I don’t know anything about it," the Inter Miami coach replied.
Messi enjoyed inarguably the best spell of his career with Barcelona, winning multiple trophies including four UEFA Champions League titles in his 17-year stint with the Catalan giants.
Why Messi's transfer to Barcelona won’t happen
Meanwhile, Messi will not return to Barcelona in a surprise loan transfer in January, according to a report by GOAL, since the club has other priorities for the winter transfer window.
The 36-year-old forward, who would be free for up to four months, has been strongly linked with a return to the reigning La Liga champions following Inter Miami’s failure to qualify for the MLS playoffs.
Even if Messi agreed to a low contract, La Liga would calculate a far bigger wage for him; therefore, no agreement will be reached with Barcelona as the club continues to operate on a shoestring budget.
Inter Miami knocked out of playoffs
Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Messi not advancing further in MLS this season as Inter Miami were knocked out of playoff qualification after going 1-0 down to Cincinnati.
