- 'Shakira' is ready to jump at the chance to coach his former side, if the opportunity ever arises
Orlando Pirates are enjoying a successful run with Jose Riveiro at the helm, but a former player believes that he can do a good job as coach of the club as well.
Joseph Kamwendo, the man they called Shakira, has asked for the chance to coach his former side, saying that he is ready to do so.
As noted by The South African, the Malawian midfielder has spoken about his desire to coach the Buccaneers if a chance arises, especially now that he is qualified to coach at the highest levels.
“I know it’s not easy to coach in South Africa as I played there, and I know the pressure. But I am ready now to coach there,” he said.
“I would be very happy if I can be given a chance to coach at my former team Orlando Pirates but I wouldn’t mind coaching at any other team as long as I am going to plough back to the sport that has given me a lot,” he added.
Why Kamwendo is called Shakira
The midfielder earned the nickname after he signed for Pirates.
He noted that fans kept calling him Shakira, and he never knew why, an article by The Sunday Mail reported.
“The name came about when I was with Orlando Pirates. The supporters started calling me Shakira. I then sought to find out why they were calling me Shakira. That’s when I was told through the office that fans were saying my legs never lie, like Shakira’s hips don’t lie,” Kamwendo explained.
Kamwendo’s time at Pirates
Despite his popularity among Pirates fans, Kamwendo only made 34 appearances for the Buccaneers. He didn’t score for the side, but did grab three assists, Transfermarkt noted.
He also played for Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Premiership when they were known as Vasco da Gama.
