  • Inter Miami have been knocked out of the Major League Soccer playoffs
  • Miami lost to Cincinnati on October 7, mathematically eliminating them from possible qualification
  • Lionel Messi made a return from injury after missing four games

Lionel Messi won't be going any further in the Major League Soccer this season. Inter Miami were knocked out of the race of qualifying for the playoff after going 1-0 down to Cincinnati on Sunday morning.

The result leaves Tata Martino's side on 33 points, seven points off DC United in the last qualification spot, with only six points left to play for.

Alvaro Barreal scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute on a day Messi made his return to competitive action following an injury layoff. The Argentine missed four games for the Herons - where they lost twice and drew twice.

He was introduced in the 55th minute but failed to impact the game as they lost a second successive game.

Inter Miami's season will now end after the doubleheader against Charlotte FC. Messi is expected to miss both games as he will be away on international duty with Argentina.

Inter Miami's 2023 season

Despite the failure of not making it to the playoffs, the Florida-based side will reflect back on a season in which they managed to land the biggest player in football's history. Messi arrived with his former Barcelona teammates, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, and together they won the Leagues Cup - the first trophy in the club's history.

They also managed to reach the US Open Cup final but lost narrowly to Houston Dynamo.

Messi nominated for two MLS awards

Sports Brief has also reported that Lionel Messi has been nominated for two Major League Soccer Awards as the regular season nears its conclusion.

Messi's name has been fronted for both the Most Valuable Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year awards, despite joining less than three months ago.

The Inter Miami skipper has been nominated despite featuring only four times in the league since joining.
