Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena was visibly upset after the match referee failed to award his side a penalty in extra time of the MTN8 final on Saturday night.
It was a fight to finish at the Moses Mabhida Stadium as the fierce encounter lived up to its billing, with both teams matching each other in all departments.
Sipho Chaine had brought down Teboho Mokoena in the danger area, but the referee signalled a freekick against Sundowns.
The goalkeeper made a howler in first-half extra-time, and while trying to make an attempt to recover the ball, he brought down the Pirates striker in the box, but the referee overlooked the incident.
Earlier in the game, Orlando Pirates right back Bandile Shandu seemed to have handled the ball in the danger area, but the match official looked elsewhere.
When the second incident happened, as Mokoena was brought down, Sundown's head coach, Rulani Mokwena, was upset.
The tactician was captured raging on the sidelines as he ranted while the referee awarded a freekick to Pirates, News 24 reports.
However, with no goals after 120 minutes, the encounter proceeded into a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine saved three penalties, helping his side to win 4-1.
Following the victory, Orlando Pirates defended the MTN8 title after beating its fierce rival on the night.
Peter Shalulile misses easy chance
Sports Brief earlier reported that Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has built a reputation for being a lethal striker, but sadly couldn’t live up to it in the MTN 8 final.
Sundowns were taking on defending champions Orlando Pirates in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and should have had a lead at halftime.
Shalulile had the best of the chances to put his side in front, as he missed a header in front of an empty net.
