  • Manchester United fought back from a goal down to beat Brentford in additional minutes
  • Academy graduate Scott McTominay came off the bench to score two goals
  • Harry Maguire justified his selection to the starting 11 by assisting the winning goal

Scott McTominay may be taking plaudits for Manchester United's comeback win over Brentford, but Harry Maguire deserves his share of the praise for his contribution to the second goal.

Manchester United went into the game off the back of a 3-2 home loss to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League at midweek, aiming to avoid three consecutive home losses.

Mattias Jansen put the visitors ahead in the first half from close range as embattled goalkeeper Andre Onana struggled to keep the ball from slipping through his palm into the net.

United looked to be heading for another defeat before two goals in additional minutes from McTominay won all three points for the home side at Old Trafford.

Maguire assists McTominay for winning goal

Former captain Maguire started in defence and was paired by veteran defender Jonny Evans as United's defence was rocked by injuries, much to fans' displeasure.

The England defender did his bits defensively and popped up with a game-winning assist for the Scottish midfielder. He flicked Bruno Fernandes's last-ditch freekick onto the head of Tominay, who headed home for the winner.

According to ESPN, McTominay was the first United player to score two stoppage-time goals in the same Premier League match, and it saved Erik ten Hag's blushes as sack calls loomed.

He described the winner to BBC as one of his favourite moments in football, emphasising the importance of not giving up, a principle he claimed he was taught at the academy he joined at age 5.

Maguire explains failed West Ham move

Sports Brief reported that Maguire explained his decision to stay at Manchester United and not move to East London despite an agreement reached between clubs.

He cited a lack of personal agreement as the reason for the collapsed move, adding that United were happy for him to stay and fight for his place in the team.

If the deals had materialised, Maguire and McTominay could have been West Ham players. Today, they combined for a winning goal.
