Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that veteran midfielder Luka Modric is "not happy" with his role at the club.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner has called down the pecking order significantly and has struggled to get minutes this season.

The 38-year-old has played 312 minutes so far this season, with Ancelotti opting to start Toni Kroos, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, and summer signing Jude Bellingham ahead of him, per Transfermarkt.

He has made only two starts this season and was an unused substitute in Real Madrid's last two La Liga games. He has been linked with a possible move to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.

In June, he signed a one-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2024.

Ancelotti admits Modric is not happy

Speaking ahead of Madrid's La Liga clash against Osasuna, the Italian admitted that the legendary midfielder is not happy with his role, per 90min.

"Modric is not happy because he is not playing a lot, but he is very motivated and always wants to help the team. He has a very important role in this squad, in the dressing room," Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti also refuted claims that the midfielder wants to leave the club.

"Absolutely not. No chance. He doesn't want to leave."

Madrid have made a terrific start to the season and sit top of La Liga with 21 points after eight games. Bellingham has become a key player for the club, while Modric's influence is slowly waning.

The Croatia international joined Madrid in 2012 and has won 23 trophies in 11 years at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, cementing his status as one of the best players in Madrid history.

Modric speaks on reduced role

Sports Brief earlier reported on Modric speaking about his reduced role at Real Madrid.

He said that he understands that he has to fight for his place, but sitting on the bench for three games in a row is new to him.

"Nobody is happy when they are out of the game. After all in my career, where I’m not sure I’ve ever been on the bench for three games in a row," he said.
