West Ham are proving their credentials as one of English football's heavyweights in Europe after beating German club Freiburg 2-1 away in the UEFA Europa League last night.

The Hammers qualified for this season's Europa League after winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, beating Italian club Fiorentina 2-1 in the final.

Lucas Paqueta put the visitors ahead early in the first half with a bullet header from last season's winning goal scorer Jarrod Bowen's cross. Freiburg equalised through Roland Sallai four minutes into the second half.

Nayef Aguerd put West Ham back in the lead even though they were without fans due to UEFA's away ban after their fans threw missiles in the Conference League final in Prague, as reported by Mirror UK.

West Ham make history

As noted by the Premier League, the Hammers reached their 17th unbeaten game in Europe, the longest by an English club, as they continue to enjoy a good spell in Europe.

The last time West Ham tasted defeat in Europe was an away loss at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2021/22 Europa League semi-final, which the Germans went on to win.

David Moyes redeemed himself with the cup win last season as the club's domestic form was poor, and they spent the majority of the season in the relegation zone.

Former captain Declan Rice played his last game for the club in the final at Prague before leaving on a £105 million move to Arsenal, a switch from East to North London. Kurt Zouma was named the new captain after his departure.

Maguire explains failed West Ham move

Sports Brief reported that Maguire explained his decision to stay at Manchester United and not move to East London despite an agreement reached between clubs.

He cited a lack of personal agreement as the reason for the collapsed move, adding that United were happy for him to stay and fight for his place in the team.
