  • Bayern Munich are currently affected by a plethora of defensive injuries
  • The Bundesliga giants are keen on the return of a former defender
  • Reports of the Bayern Munich fans protesting the club's decision have emerged

Bayern Munich headed into the 2023/24 season looking the thinnest in defence as they have in recent years.

The Bundesliga giants, who sanctioned the departures of defenders Benjamin Pavard, Joseph Stanisic, and Antonio Tikvic, failed to cover up for these departures, leaving them vulnerable at the back as they headed into what has been dubbed a 'crucial season' for the Bavarian club.

Compounding their woes, persistent injuries have plagued central defenders Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt, and Kim Min-jae, forcing the club's hierarchy to seek a temporary solution to bolster their defence. The club hierarchy has opted for a temporary fix to strengthen their defence and the name of former defender Jerome Boateng appears to herald this list.

According to reports from Goal, the Bayern hierarchy is leaning towards giving Boateng a short-term contract in order to strengthen the squad.

However, there are concerns over his open court case and an impending protest by the fans on Sunday during the game against Freiburg.

In spite of Boateng spending the better part of the last decade with the Bavarians, it appears fans of the club do not fancy a return for their former defender.

Fans to protest against signing Boateng

Despite reports from Football Transfer of the German World Cup winner turning down an offer from Premier League strugglers Everton in favour of a return to the Allianz Arena, the 35-year-old's transfer looks set to be marred by the fans' protest.

Reports from German football outlet TZ Muenchen via @iMiaSanMia states if the club does not reverse its decision to sign Boateng by Saturday, Bayern fans were gearing up to protest during Sunday's game against Freiburg, displaying banners calling for the transfer to be halted.

Despite Boateng being spotted training with Bayern's first team, it remains uncertain whether this would prompt the club's leadership to reconsider their decision.

Bayern Munich set Champions League record

In a previous report, Sports Brief stated that Bayern Munich have entered the history books again after another hard-fought victory in the UEFA Champions League against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, October 3.

Dutch teenager, Mathys Tel struck late to help the Bavarians come from behind to beat the Danish club 2-1 and maintain their unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage.

The Bavarian club have not lost a Champions League group stage match since September 2017, one of the longest unbeaten runs in the competition's history.
