  • Lionel Messi missed his fourth consecutive Inter Miami game due to injury
  • Miami lost 4-1 away at Chicago Fire, with the Argentina captain sitting out once again
  • He has played only 37 minutes in the last seven games, and Miami have won just twice

Inter Miami continue to struggle in Lionel Messi's absence after he missed his fourth consecutive game due to an injury he suffered in the 4-0 win over Toronto.

Messi joined the club in July and had a run of 12 games in 48 days, during which the club was unbeaten and won the inaugural Leagues Cup, beating Nashville SC in the final.

His departure for the September international break coincided with him getting injured and Miami having a dry spell. They struggled to get results in the absence of their captain.

As CBS Sports noted, Miami are no longer in control of their playoff destiny after losing 4-1 to Chicago Fire last night with three games left in the MLS season.

Miami's results without Messi

Since he joined the club in July, the first game Messi missed due to international engagement was against Sporting Kansas City; Miami won 3-2, with Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana scoring twice.

He returned from the international break with fitness issues and was forced to sit out the trip to Atlanta, where the Herons were beaten 5-2 against the same team they defeated 4-0 in the Leagues Cup with Messi.

His return to the pitch at Toronto lasted only 37 minutes, and with the scores at 0-0, Miami won 4-0, and that was the last time they tasted a win in his absence.

Since his injury, they've lost two games - the US Open Cup final, 2-1 to Houston Dynamo, and last night's result against Chicago Fire. They also recorded two draws against Orlando and New York City.

Miami were winless in 10 games before the former Barcelona star joined, and the bad form looked to have returned in his absence. According to TyC Sports, the plan is for Messi to get minutes against Cincinnati at the weekend before he flies out for the October international break with Argentina.

When will Messi play again?

Sports Brief reported that Tata Martino provided an update on Messi's fitness condition after Miami lost to Chicago Fire. It was Messi's fourth consecutive game missed due to injury.

Miami have three league games left in the season as they aim for a playoff spot, which is no longer in their hands. Martino confirmed that Messi has a chance to play at the weekend, having left his injury behind.
