  • FIFA have recently announced the host countries for the 2030 edition of the World Cup
  • Six countries in three continents will host the tournament: Portugal, Spain, and Morocco
  • South American nations Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will also host one game each

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will take a new turn with six host countries across three continents announced for the event, including three South American nations.

2022 semi-finalists, Morocco will team up with Iberian Islands, Portugal and Spain as the main host nations, while one game each will be played in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

This will be the first World Cup hosted in six countries, with the 2026 edition to be hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada - the only other to have more than two hosts aside from Korea-Japan in 2002.

It will also be the first tournament on African soil since South Africa hosted the 2010 edition.

Why are South American nations also hosts?

Football fans have been left wondering why three South American countries will each host a game at the 2030 Mundial.

As reported by The Athletic, this is because it is the 100-year anniversary of the tournament and to mark it, FIFA is taking the event to the region that hosted it first, the countries that played the final, and the confederation headquarters.

Uruguay hosted and won the inaugural edition, beating Argentina 4-2 in the final. The South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL is headquartered in Paraguay and was the only football confederation then.

CONMEBOL initially put forward an outright hosting bid to mark the centenary celebrations but were only considered for the first three games.

According to The Independent, Real Madrid's Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is expected to host the opening ceremony and the final, while Barcelona's Camp Nou is also a candidate.

The 2034 edition will be hosted in Asia or Oceania as part of FIFA's rotation policy. Saudi Arabia have announced their bid for the edition.
