  • Raphael Varane claimed on Monday that Man United have the quality to win the Champions League
  • However, his claims have seemingly come back to haunt him following United's 3-2 defeat vs. Galatasaray
  • The Red Devils currently sit bottom of Group A with no point

Raphael Varane may have spoken too soon after Champions League comments he made before Man United's meeting with Galatasaray seemingly came back to bite him.

United hosted the Turkish giants on Tuesday night at Old Trafford for their second match in Group A.

The Red Devils were desperate to secure a positive result to get their European campaign back on track, having lost the opening game against Bayern Munich.

However, this was not the case, as Erik ten Hag's charges were humbled by the visitors, with Rasmus Hojlund's brace being rendered a mere consolation.

The Guardian reports that goals from Wilfried Zaha, Kerem Akturkoglu, and Mauro Icardi cancelled out Hojlund's two goals.

The defeat leaves United bottom of their pool behind FC Copenhagen, Galatasaray, and Bayern Munich.

Varane's comments return to haunt him

United's defeat came just hours after Varane claimed that United could win this season's Champions League title.

Sportbible reports that the centre-back made the claims on Monday, hours before the Red Devils' meeting with Galatasaray.

“Yes, I think so, I think the quality is in the squad. The competition is difficult, you have to take care of every detail, but we have a team of quality and of good mentality," he said.
“We have to make some improvements, it was not the start to the season we expected, but I still believe we have the quality to compete with the best teams in the world," he added.

However, his comments did not age well, with the defeat to Galatasaray seeing the Frenchman get roasted by fans online.

@MohitSi27664172 posted:

"With this performance, Varane still thinks we can win the Champions League?"

@Arnoldzizou10 recalled:

"Didn’t Raphael Varane recently say that Man United have the quality to win the Champions League? I woke up to news that these Red Devils lost 3-2 to Galatasaray at home and are now bottom of their group after two matchdays. This club can heal people’s depression."

@juliej_lazarus lamented:

"Rapha Varane thinks we have the quality to win the Champions League. What a joke."

@stephenwjwebb concluded:

"And Varane said we are good enough to win the Champions League also. Doubt it."

Ten Hag defends Onana

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Erik ten Hag has launched a passionate defence of Andre Onana in the wake of his costly mistakes in the Champions League.

Onana was between the sticks on Tuesday night when United hosted Galatasaray for their second Group A game played at Old Trafford.

However, the Cameroonian did little to help his side earn a positive result, with his costly mistakes denying the hosts the three points.
