  • Sundowns could become the first team to go through the whole league season without defeat

Mamelodi Sundowns are no strangers to breaking records in the Premier Soccer League.

The Brazilians have made a habit of beating some of the long-standing records in the PSL, but there’s still more to achieve.

Sports Brief looks at five records Masandawana can break during the 2023/24 season.

Longest winning streak from the season’s start

Sundowns defeated Stellenbosch FC last week (September 27) to equal Kaizer Chiefs’ record of winning the first eight games of the season.

The Brazilians will have a chance to surpass that mark and make it nine wins out of nine at the end of the month.

Sundowns will take on Swallows on October 29, with the chance to set a new record in the league.

Most goals scored in all competitions

Kaizer Chiefs have set many records over the years, but Sundowns aim to tear them all down.

Another record both teams share is for scoring the most goals in a season across all competitions. The Amakhosi scored 98 goals in the 1998/99 season, while Masandwana matched that in 1999/2000 and 2021/22.

The Brazilians will look to become the first side to score 100 goals in a season and stand a great chance of doing so.

They will compete in the DStv Premiership, MTN 8 final, Nedbank Cup, and CAF Champions League, providing them plenty of chances to get goals.

Most clean sheets in a season

In the 2003/04 league season, Chiefs set a benchmark when they recorded 21 clean sheets. No team has got above 20 games without conceding in a season since.

Sundowns have already notched five clean sheets from eight games and need to go another 17 without conceding from their remaining 22 games to dethrone the Amakhosi.

Most goals by a player

While the next record isn’t a team one, it is one that a Sundowns player can steal from a former Chiefs star.

In the 2004/05 season, former Chiefs striker, Collins Mbesuma scored 25 goals in the league and 35 across all competitions.

The record has yet to be surpassed, though Peter Shalulile came close last season. As noted by Transfermarkt, Shalulile scored 21 goals in the league and 34 across all competitions.

This season, Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro Costa look most likely to threaten the record.

An invincible season

No South African side has gone a whole season in the league without defeat. The Brazilians have already gone eight games without losing and are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Sundowns can become the Invincibles of South Africa, much like Arsenal. Per Goal, the Gunners went 38 games without defeat, while the South African league only consists of 30 games.

Sundowns make PSL history

As Sports Brief also previously reported, Mamelodi Sundowns have set a new record in the history of the Premier Soccer League.

The reigning DStv Premiership champions came from behind to beat Stellenbosch FC to set a new record and also equal another.

With their victory over Stellies, Sundows made it 32 games in the league without defeat, ending Kaizer Chiefs’ long-standing record.
