- The Uruguayan midfielder surprisingly recorded an impressive goal tally amid his off-field turbulence
The name of Real Madrid's Federico Valverde was always one of the first names on coach Carlo Ancelotti's team sheet during the 2022/23 season.
The young Uruguayan star who burst onto the scenes at the Bernabeu in 2018 featured 54 times for the Spanish giants through the course of the season.
Valverde had started the season firing on all cylinders but saw his form dwindle in a relatively alarming manner, which subsequently appeared a cause of worry for many at the Spanish club's hierarchy, as reported by Goal.
The midfielder who continues to be pivotal to the set-up of the club's Italian manager recently opened up on the cause of his form decline through the second half of last season.
Valverde speaks on last season's struggles
The Uruguayan senior national team captain, speaking to the press ahead of his side's clash against Napoli, was quoted by Football Espana to have said:
"Personally, I'm not going to remember it because it was a hard time. I don't wish it on anyone, but these are things in life that create obstacles for you. It's part of life,
I tried to focus on football, on the World Cup… and it wasn't how I expected:
Said the midfielder, reacting to the complications his wife faced during his child's birth.
"The Copa del Rey was a very nice end, that helped me forget a little about everything I went through.
I matured as a person and, although there are moments that you do not expect, but you have to move forward. Being with your family, the ones you love, they're the ones who gives you that extra bit to continue trusting in life."

FootballIt should be recalled that Valverde, who scored ten goals last season, returned from the World Cup to his pregnant wife and several weeks later was told that a birth defect may leave their child with severe difficulties and perhaps even cause them to lose the child. Fortunately, scans a few weeks later showed that the baby would be born healthy.
