The main difference between the Arena Football League and other football leagues like the NFL and the XFL is that the Arena League is played in indoor stadiums similar to those that ice hockey teams play in. The reinvented version coming back in 2024 will feature sixteen franchises from all over North America.

How much are Arena Football players paid?

Arena football has never had the same amount of corporate popularity or investment as the NFL. Most players make way below what their NFL counterparts make. According to careerbliss.com, the average AFL salary is $37,500 annually. The lowest-paid player earns $22,000 annually, while the highest Arena Football salary is $200,000 annually. This is in stark contrast to the NFL, where the highest-paid player, Joe Burrow, takes home $55 million annually before taxes.

What makes Arena Football different from the NFL?

Aside from the fact that the AFL is played in indoor arenas, the rules of the game also vary. NFL teams use a huge roster of 53 players every game, while Arena Football uses only 20. Some of the rules Arena has relate more to college football and the NCAA.

Why did the Arena Football League stop?

The AFL has had a consistent fanbase since its inception in 1986. However, towards the 2010s, financial problems started plaguing the teams and the league itself. The AFL first filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Despite a financial bailout by new owners, teams started pulling out slowly. By the time the league was ceasing operations in 2019, there were only six teams still active. The main challenge for teams is dealing with the high costs of maintenance while still attempting to make a profit.
