FootballKenyan International Joseph Okumu Helps Reims to Second Clean Sheet in Win Over Lyon
- Lyon are still looking for their first win of the season
- It did not come on Sunday, October 1 as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to a high-flying Reims
- The game also marked Kenyan international Joseph Okumu’s first league clean sheet with his new side
Kenyan international Joseph Okumu continued his decent performances for his new team as he helped FC Reims keep a clean sheet in the Ligue 1.
On Sunday, October 1, Reims came up against a struggling Lyon, knowing a win would be enough to see them leap frog champions Paris Saint Germain.
The fact that Okumu and company were coming up against Ligue 1’s bottom side gave them more incentive to go for all three points.
Both sides had some intent in attack when the game finally went underway, but it took 15 minutes for either goalkeeper to get tested.
Lyon, still searching for a first win and first goal under new manager Fabio Gross, fell behind at the stroke of halftime after Reims’ Marshall Munetsi found himself free inside the area to head in Junya Ito’s cross.
After the break, Reims were dominant in possession, and they eventually made it count with 20 minutes to go as Yunis Abdelhamid nodded home his second goal in as many games as the ball fell kindly to him after Antony Lopes saved Ito’s header.
This was the first clean sheet Reims have kept all season after conceding against Montpellier, Metz, Brest and Lille.
However, a third win of the season for Joseph Okumu and his teammates meant they moved above Paris Saint Germain with 13 points from seven games.
The Kenyan joined Reims from Belgian side Gent and has already established himself as an integral team member.
In Reims’ opening seven games, the Kenyan has featured in five of them, playing the entire 90 minutes in three, according to Transfermkt.
