  • Burno Fernandes is one of the most creative players in the Premier League and world
  • The Manchester United captain has led the league in creative stats since his arrival
  • However, it did not all begin as a number 10 for the Portuguese magnifico

Bruno Fernandes is one of football's most creative players currently, but it did not all start for the Portuguese midfielder, and he has now disclosed his former position.

Fernandes arrived in the Premier League in the winter window of 2020 and instantly announced himself as a creative engine under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He has been pivotal to every success United have achieved on the pitch since he joined, and his leadership skills have propelled him to the club's captain, succeeding Harry Maguire.

Fernandes discloses first position

Fernandes, like many footballers, tried several positions before settling for one. As quoted by Daily Star, the Portugal international, speaking to Sky Sports, said of his first position.

"I’ve played in every position on the pitch. I started as a centre-back until 15/16 years of age. It’s because I said to the manager 'I don’t want to be a centre-back any more'," he said.

At 16, he was moved up by an age group when the senior team lacked a centre-back, but he was rejected due to his lack of aggression. He returned to his group, who needed a striker and opted to fill in.

"The first training I played as a striker, I scored two goals. I’ve played in every position. Even in Italy [where he played for Udinese and Sampdoria], I played at wing-back on the left side," he said.
"It’s only keeper I haven’t played, but I went to the bench once when I was a second goalkeeper. I was 12 I think," he added.

As reported by Football Fancast, his versatility could come in handy again, with Erik ten Hag considering playing him on the right wing to replace the possible departure of Jadon Sancho.

Fernandes deployed as centre-back

Sports Brief reported that Bruno Fernandes played as centre-back in the final minutes of Manchester United's 3-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ten Hag reshuffled the team in the second half, with Fernandes pushed to right centre-back to utilise his ball-moving skills to push the ball higher up the pitch.
