  • Lionel Messi left Europe and moved to the Major League Soccer with Inter Miami
  • He helped the club to win the inaugural Leagues Cup in his first two months
  • Bayern Munich star, Matthijs de Ligt may have unknowingly called the MLS the retirement league

Lionel Messi's move to the Major League Soccer with Inter Miami had fans claiming that he went there to retire, and one Bayern Munich player may have unknowingly keyed into that.

Messi endured a difficult two years at Paris Saint-Germain after shockingly leaving FC Barcelona in 2021. He ran down his contract at the French capital and headed for the United States.

He had other options before joining Inter Miami - to return to FC Barcelona, who were not financially able to seal the deal, or accept a world-record salary from Al-Hilal.

As reported by Marca, despite turning down the massive offer from Saudi Arabia, he is handsomely paid in the US. He earns $54m yearly, amongst other endorsements, particularly with Apple TV and Adidas.

De Ligt jokes that Messi is retired

Europe is considered the centre of football globally and boasts some of the most appealing and competitive leagues. When a top star departs Europe, fans joke that he has retired.

Dutch defender, Matthijs de Ligt appeared to be agreeing with the fans while answering Bayern Munich's Rapid Fire Question on which retired footballer he would like to play with, to which he responded, "Lionel Messi".

France legend Zinedine Zidane and Brazilian entertainer Ronaldinho were the two popular choices.

Beckham responds to 'script' claims

Inter Miami were the worst team in Major League Soccer before Messi's arrival but became the best and went unbeaten in nine games with the World Cup winner in the team, leading to claims that games are scripted for him.

As reported by Sports Brief, Beckham gave a brilliant response to these claims, calling it the best compliment anyone could give the players because it's like a movie.

When will Messi play again?

Sports Brief reported that Tata Martino provided an update on Messi's fitness after losing the cup final, which the captain missed due to muscle fatigue.

Miami have five league games left in the season as they aim for a playoff spot. Martino confirmed Messi will play an active part, but his minutes will be managed on a game-by-game basis.
