  • This is the worst start to the season by the Italian side who sit just above the relegation places
  • In his post-match interview, Mourinho had a bizarre defence of his poor start to the campaign

Jose Mourinho remained defiant with his comments after his side was thrashed 4-1 by Genoa on Thursday.

Prior to the game, Genoa was winless against Roma in 16 attempts and went into the game having collected just one point from their last three games.

But they still managed to stun the Gialorissi courtesy of goals from Albert Gudmundsson, Mateo Retegui, Morten Thorsby and Junior Messias as Mourinho’s side completely crumbled in the second half.

Bryan Cristante found an equalizer in the 22nd minute to make the score 1-1, but that was the only goal Roma ended up scoring. The 2022 Europa Conference League winners now find themselves 16th on the log, just two points above the relegation places, according to GOAL.com.

What Mourinho said

After the full-time whistle, boos rang around the Luigi Ferraris stadium from the visiting fans, who heckled Mourinho for his side’s performance.

There was also a general feeling of the infamous ‘third-season syndrome’ which has been associated with the Portuguese tactician in every club he has gone to.

But Mourinho remained firm in his stance post-match, as he admitted his team have had a poor start, but was still quick to point out his achievements with Roma.

“I apologise to the studio, but I have no real desire to talk.,” Mourinho told DAZN’s pitch-side reporter, as per @Guillaumemp.

“I didn't speak to the players. When I don't talk to the players, then it means I can't really discuss this in-depth and answer your questions either.”

When asked about the poor start to the season, he added:

“It is the worst of my career too,' he said. 'However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row.”

Roma’s next fixture is a home game against Frosinone on Sunday, October 1.

Fans show their frustration after Roma's defeat

Sports Brief also reported on fans’ discontent after Roma’s defeat to Genoa.

As it is a custom, he led the players to approach the away end and applaud the travelling fans who had travelled over 500 kilometres to watch a shambolic display.

The fans were, however, having no applause and chanted back at them.
