  • Manchester City were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United
  • Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the feisty encounter to dump City out
  • Pep Guardiola was upset with the official and confronted him after the game

Pep Guardiola's emotions were high last night and he displayed this by confronting the match official after Manchester City's elimination from the Carabao Cup.

City played Newcastle United at St. James Park and came out with a 1-0 loss thanks to Alexander Isak's goal, which means they can no longer achieve a quadruple this season.

The Premier League champions were dominant in the first half but their opponents responded in the second half, with Isak scoring eight minutes after the restart and Eddie Howe's men seeing out the win.

The Citizens were eliminated from the competition's quarter-final last season by relegated side, Southampton. They have won the trophy four times under the Spanish boss.

Guardiola confronts referee after Newcastle game

As picked up on social media, Guardiola confronted match official, Chris Kavanaugh and vented his frustration with his management of the game, particularly with Newcastle's physicality in the second half.

As quoted by Daily Star, the former Barcelona boss continued his rant at his post-match conference.

"I think Newcastle couldn’t accept our first-half dominance; they increased the rhythm and aggression and kicking and they were there, more aggressive. We struggled a little but that’s normal."

Guardiola recalled his words at half-time that the second half would be a different affair.

"I don’t know how many fouls they did and how many we did but we had double yellow cards. It is what it is," he added.

City committed 10 fouls in the game, while their opponents had 12. Both teams received two bookings each, three for the treble winners if you take into account Guardiola's yellow card.

Guardiola's angry moment with fan

Sports Brief also reported on Guardiola's angry moment with a fan during City's 1-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United.

He was picked up by the camera voicing his frustration at the supporter during the latter stages of the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola explained at his presser that the fan had asked him to make a substitution and he invited them to sit in his coaching position.
