The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will be the co-hosts of the 2027 edition of the African Cup of Nations.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe made the announcement after the CAF Executive Committee Meeting that was held in Cairo on Wednesday.

CAF said in a statement:

"The biggest event on African soil returns to East Africa after 51 years since it was last hosted by Ethiopia in 1976. This will be the 36th edition of the competition and will be the very first time it is hosted by three countries."

Meanwhile, Morocco will host the next edition in 2025. The North African nation will be hosting the continental showpiece for the second time, 35 years after they staged the competition in 1988.

West African nation Nigeria had also tendered a proposal to co-host the 2027 edition of the tournament with neighbours Benin Republic, but their bid failed.

The last time Nigeria hosted the competition was in 2000, when they co-hosted alongside Ghana.

How Nigeria submitted AFCON 2027 bid

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigeria's Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, alongside the representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), were in Egypt to bid for the hosting rights of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria first hosted the competition in 1980 and won it, but failed to replicate such when they jointly hosted the tournament with Ghana in 2000.

The Minister of Sports confirmed that Nigeria had proposed to host the competition alongside neighbouring country Benin Republic.
