- Bayern Munich kicked off this season’s DFB Pokal away at Liga 3 side Preussen Munster
- The club lost one of its attackers due to a severe injury
- The Bavarian club have stated that the injured forward will undergo surgery today
Bayern Munich kicked off their charge to reclaim the DFB Pokal title with a commanding victory away at Liga 3 side Pressuen Munster, albeit at a considerable cost.
The Bavarian side were dealt a blow when 28-year-old attacker, Serge Gnabry went down clutching his arms in the fourth minute.
As reported by Bundesliga.com, the former Arsenal star collided with Johannes Schenk - a player on loan from Bayern - and unfortunately couldn't continue and had to be replaced in the 11th minute.
Gnabry returned to the bench with his arm in a sling and it was subsequently confirmed that the German international had broken his arm.
The coach of the Bundesliga giants, Thomas Tuchel, further provided context to the situation surrounding Gnabry's injury.
Thomas Tuchel on Serge Gnabry
Speaking after the game, Tuchel said, as quoted by Get Football News Germany:
"My latest statement is that he will have an operation tomorrow. He will be missing for a few weeks. That is very bitter for him personally but also for us."
The injury to Gnabry further compounds the injury woes of the 51-year-old tactician, given he was recently dealt a triple injury blow to three centre defenders: Kim Min-jae, Matthijs de Ligt, and Dayot Upamecano.
Leon Goretzka and Noussair Mazraoui both started in central defence and it appears the makeshift pairing could continue when Bayern Munich square off against title challengers RB Leipzig in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash.
