The decision was announced at a CAF Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, as confirmed on social media.

Morocco are one-time African champions, winning the tournament in 1976 before reaching the final in 2004, where they lost to Tunisia.

The North African nation recently hosted several major championships, including the FIFA Club World Cup and the Africa Women's Cup of Nations prior to being awarded the 2025 AFCON.

The Atlas Lions are also working on co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast will host the 2023 edition next year with the draw for the tournament set for October 12 in Abidjan. Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will host the 2027 edition.

Morocco have qualified for the tournament and are one of the favourites to win the competition in January and February, as reported by the BBC.
