FootballMauro Icardi Misses Empty Net from Penalty Routine as Fans Recall Messi, Suarez Moment
- Mauro Icardi went viral on Wednesday for what fans dubbed the worst penalty attempt ever
- The Argentine hit a low shot wide in a unique penalty routine in a game against Istanbulspor
- The former Inter striker was still the match-winner as Galatasaray claimed a narrow 1-0 win
Galatasaray striker, Mauro Icardi is responsible for arguably the most bizarre penalty miss you will see all week.
The Turkish giants came up against struggling Istanbulspor on September 26 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, in a game where the visitors were heavy favourites.
Istanbulspor are struggling in the league, as they are winless in their four games this season including two losses.
Galatasaray went into the game with four successive league wins coupled with an encouraging 2-2 draw in the UEFA Champions League against FC Copenhagen.
Icardi has been in good form for his Turkish club and for this reason, it came as a huge surprise when he missed a goal from only a few yards out.
Icardi fluffs Galatasaray penalty effort
Galatasaray were handed a chance to get one over their opponents from the penalty spot and up stepped Kerem Akturkoglu.
However, the winger had a trick up his sleeve and instead of going for goal, he gently laid the ball on for Icardi, who simply had to keep it on target.
As seen on beInSports Turkey, the Argentine somehow hit his effort wide despite the goalkeeper floored. Following the now infamous penalty miss, Icardi has been dragged by fans on X (formerly Twitter).

This is not the first time the audacious penalty technique has been attempted in football.
In 2016, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez took on a similar routine from the spot kick, with the Argentine laying the ball for the Uruguayan, who made no mistake against Celta Vigo.

FootballLucky for Icardi, the miss did not prove to be costly as he was ultimately the match-winner with a goal at the stroke of half-time.
Galatasaray makes UCL comeback vs. Copenhagen
Sports Brief also provided a wrap of the UCL after the first round of matches in Group A, with Galatasaray drawing against FC Copenhagen in their fixture.
