The Nigeria Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, alongside the representative of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), are in Egypt to bid for the hosting rights of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria first hosted the competition in 1980 and won it, but failed to replicate such when they jointly hosted the tournament with Ghana in 2000.

The Super Eagles lost to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in the final of the competition at the National Stadium in Lagos.

Enoh confirmed his arrival in Egypt alongside the NFF on his official page on X (formerly known as Twitter), according to the Punch.

"With representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), I have arrived in Cairo, Egypt," he said.
"We are here to attend the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee meeting, as representatives of the Nigerian Government."

The Minister of Sports confirmed that Nigeria are planning to host the competition alongside their neighbouring country Benin Republic.

"Our attendance is because Nigeria and the Benin Republic submitted a joint bid to host AFCON in 2027. Other Governments and Member Associations bidding to host AFCON in 2027 will also be in attendance," he added.

The Senator also gave a brief analysis of how the bidding process will go, with other countries also interested in hosting the competition.

"Prior to this meeting, all countries bidding to host this tournament were visited by the Independent Assessment Committees of CAF to assess the state of their readiness to host this continental tournament."

Owan Enoh: All you need to know

Sports Brief earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu has appointed Senator John Owan Enoh as the new Sports Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The allocation of portfolios to all appointed ministers, whom the Senate screened, was confirmed on August 16.

Owan Enoh becomes the 36th person to supervise Nigerian sports since Chief Joseph Modupe Johnson (JMJ) in 1960.
