The state of refereeing in South Africa is once again in the spotlight.
There has been a lot of chatter already about the refereeing after the MTN 8 semi-final between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Amakhosi were denied a penalty late in the game, leading to an uproar on social media, and it’s only escalated further after AmaZulu’s last match.
The Usuthu drew 0-0 with Polokwane City in that fixture but were denied a clear penalty in the first half of the game. As noted by Soccer Laduma, AmaZulu had a penalty shout in the first half when Bulelani Nikani handled in the box.
The defender inexplicably stopped the ball with his hand after the keeper passed it to him from a goal kick.
The referee blew the whistle at first but didn’t give a penalty despite the appeals of AmaZulu players and management.
The incident has led to further calls for the South African Football Association to intervene or for the Premier Soccer League to do more.
Kaizer Chiefs fans want justice
Kaizer Chiefs fans aren’t in the mood for Heritage Day celebrations.
The club’s supporters are more interested in getting justice for their defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8, Sports Brief reported.
