  • Kaizer Chiefs were denied a late penalty after Thapelo Maseko made contact with Mduduzi Mdantsane in the box
  • The Springboks were on the Irish try line when the referee called an end to the game, resulting in an Ireland win
  • Supporters of both the Amakhosi and South Africa are unhappy with the decisions made in their respective games

Kaizer Chiefs and Springbok supporters are not happy this morning.

The Soweto-based side and the South African national rugby team both suffered defeat over the weekend, but the referee’s calls played a big part in that loss.

Chiefs were beaten 2-1 by Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 semi-final, while the Boks were beaten by Ireland in the Rugby World Cup.

Trailing 2-1 in the dying minutes, Chiefs had calls for a penalty waived off after Thapelo Maseko appeared to have kicked Mduduzi Mdantsane in the box.

The Chiefs’ player went down, but the referee allowed the game to continue. Had the Amakhosi been given the penalty and converted it, they would have knocked out the Brazilians.

Springboks denied the chance to beat Ireland

The Boks were also the victims of a controversial call in their game against the Irish.

The defending champions had a maul going against the Irish in the dying minutes of the game and were on the Irish try line.

Despite having the ball out of the maul and ready to attack, referee Ben O’Keeffe blew the whistle, awarding Ireland a penalty and ending the match. The decision left many puzzled as the Irish secured a tight win.

With the two sides coming out on the wrong end of the referee's call, fans have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction.

@Kiddy_Katz:

“It was Springboks vs Libbok and the referee, both should be investigated 🫵🏾.”

@Element_E_:

“@rugbyworldcup the referee plotted @Springboks loss tonight against the overrated Ireland.”

@AndyMcDusty:

“Whenever Ben O'Keefe is the referee it feels like it's the #Springboks versus Our Opponents AND Ben O'Keefe. #RSAvIRE”

Doctor Khumalo weighs in on penalty shout

Former Kaizer Chiefs superstar Doctor Khumalo has faulted referee Luxolo Badi for not awarding AmaKhosi a penalty against Mamelodi Sundowns.

After the first leg clash of their 11th MTN8 semi-final ended 1-1, Masandawana went through following a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture.

It took just ten seconds into the game before Peter Shalulile opened the scoring to give the home team the advantage, Sports Brief reported.
