  • Andre Onana is having a difficult start to life as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper

  • Veteran defender Jonny Evans has publicly backed the Cameroonian in the face of criticisms

Andre Onana is receiving support from different quarters after taking responsibility for costing Manchester United the UEFA Champions League game against Bayern Munich.

Onana joined United over the summer and was immediately installed as the first choice, replacing departed club legend David de Gea, whose contract expired.

He is not having the best start to life between the sticks for the Red Devils and has conceded 14 goals in his opening six games, including 10 in the last three games.

His blunder gifted Bayern the lead in United's 4-3 loss in their group stage's opening game after fumbling Leroy Sane's shot and allowing it to go under his palm and into the net.

Jonny Evans backs Onana

The Cameroonian spoke to CBS Sports Golazo after the game and claimed it was his fault the team lost, taking full responsibility for his mistake.

Veteran defender Jonny Evans, speaking to TNT Sports, said Onana shouldn't have granted the interview and backed him to turn the situation around and have a great career at Old Trafford.

“It’s a big thing for him to do that. He didn't have to do that,” Evans said. “I think it's very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself. I've seen that quite a lot. And I've experienced that myself.
“He's replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time. Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in, and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”

Onana and United have the chance to redeem themselves and return to winning ways against Burnley tonight, having lost their last two league games 3-1 to Arsenal and Brighton.
