- Mikel Arteta is having a goalkeeping headache with Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya
- The Arsenal boss teased tactically substituting goalkeepers to deal with the situation
- Former goalkeeper Bernd Leno is not a fan of Arteta's handling of the goalkeeper situation
Mikel Arteta is having a goalkeeper conundrum at Arsenal, and former goalie Bernd Leno is not a fan of how the manager handles the situation.
Aaron Ramsdale was Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper since joining the club from Sheffield United in 2021, immediately replacing Leno as the number 1 shot-stopper.
The German was shipped to London neighbours Fulham at the beginning of last season, while Matt Turner backed Ramsdale up in the goal before the American also moved to Nottingham Forest this previous summer.
Arteta's search for a replacement or perhaps another number one led to the loan signing of David Raya from Brentford for an initial £3m with an option to make it permanent for £27m, as reported by The Athletic.
Leno hits out at Arteta
As reported by Daily Star, Raya's arrival created immediate problems for Ramsdale, and Arteta teased a radical idea of tactically substituting goalkeepers to deal with the situation, but his former goalie Leno is not a fan of the concept.
“As a manager, I would never change my goalkeeper, to say, ‘Oh, today I need a goalkeeper good with his feet, or one good at crosses,’ or, ‘Today I need a good shot-stopper because we play against Man City and they will have ten shots or something.’ I would never do that,” he told The Times.
Raya has been preferred in goal for the last two games against Everton and the Champions League game against PSV, and he is expected to start in the North London derby against Tottenham.
It has led to widespread speculation in the English media that it's the end of the road for the England international, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich interested in snapping him up.
