Bush Bucks, from the Mthatha area in the Eastern Cape, also lost their first six fixtures in 1999 but went on to finish 13th in the league that season.

With the pressure on Shaun Bartlett’s side not to replicate the 24-year-old record, Spurs needed a good start against Lamontville Golden Arrows in Cape Town.

Despite Arrows piling on pressure from the get-go, it was Spurs who grabbed the first goal thanks to Ashley Cupido before 15 minutes.

The striker, who scored 15 goals in the National First Division last season, finally scored his first goal in the big leagues.

Shaun Bartlett’s men held onto their lead until the break, but Arrows breached their defences in the second.

Coach Mabuthi Khanyeza rang the changes and brought on striker Lungelo Nguse. The 24-year-old had an immediate impact and scored the equaliser in the 50th minute of the game.

With the Kwazulu-Natal pushing forward for a winner, it was Nguse who grabbed it for them. The attacker got enough contact on the ball from a cross in the 80th minute to find the back of the net and give the KZN side their fourth win of the season.

Arrows moved up to second place on the table, just four points behind Mamelodi Sundowns. The Brazilians have played a game less.

Spurs remain rooted at the bottom of the table with zero wins from six games.

Remembering South Africa's legendary former teams

South African football has been graced by many popular football sides over the years.

Some sides still compete today, while others have faded into obscurity over time. Some, in the tradition of South African football, were bought by another side and had their names changed, like Cape Town Spurs.

Sports Brief looks at five sides that no longer compete in the Premier Soccer League.
