Hildah ‘Breadwinner’ Magaia Ruled Out of Banyana Banyana’s Clash Against USA

Banyana Banyana are preparing for their upcoming friendlies but will have to do it without one of their star players.

The Women’s African Cup of Nations winners will take on the third-ranked United States of America in two friendlies later this month.

Desiree Ellis announced a squad of 21 players for the two games but has had to ring in some changes. As noted by iDiski Times, Banyana will now be without three stars.

'Breadwinner' Hildah Magaia has been withdrawn because of medical reasons, while Sibulele Holweni suffered an injury and has also been withdrawn.

Defender, Noko Matlou will not make the trip due to VISA issues.

Magaia injured during the World Cup

Magaia played a big role for Banyana at the World Cup but also suffered an injury during the tournament.

As noted by FAR Post, she scored Banyana’s opening goal of the tournament against Sweden but was injured in the aftermath. Thankfully, the injury wasn’t too serious and she returned to the team.

Banyana and USA make Round of 16

Both South Africa and the USA made it to the tournament's knockout stages in Australia and New Zealand. Banyana were knocked out in the Round of 16 by the Netherlands, while Sweden dumped the USA out of the tournament.

Banyana win big at Momentum Awards

Banyana have won big at the Momentum Gsport Awards, which honour Africa’s best female sports teams and stars. The 18th edition was hosted in Johannesburg on September 12.

Banyana, who won the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and made history in the World Cup, were among the big winners, as were some of their personnel, Sports Brief reported.

The African champions made history at the FIFA Women's World Cup when they qualified for the knockout stages.
