  • Hannibal Mejbri scored his first goal for Manchester United on Saturday, September 16
  • The goal proved to be a consolation as Brighton emerged 3-1 winners at Old Trafford
  • Regardless, Mejbri celebrated the goal emphatically and has since taken to social media to explain his celebration

Hannibal Mejbri took to social media to make an honest admission after scoring his first goal in Manchester United colours.

The 20-year old’s beautiful strike at Old Trafford, however, proved to be a consolation as the Red Devils succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against a resurgent Brighton.

United were trailing 3-0 thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro, but Mejbri, straight out of the bench, reduced the deficit to two.

BBC reports that Mejbri fired the ball from 25 yards to hand his side the first goal of the game, 15 minutes from time, but it proved to be too little too late.

Damage had already been done, but that did not stop the youngster, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Birmingham City from emphatically celebrating his maiden goal for the Red Devils.

Mejbir’s explanation

Taking to Instagram after the game, Mejbri decided to explain his celebration amid some criticism from frustrated Manchester United fans who saw little to smile about after a second league defeat in a row.

As cited on Manchester Evening News, Mejbri highlighted the hard work he had put in, which played a factor in why he was so elated after scoring.

"Years of work went into that moment to score a goal for this incredible club. Impossible to enjoy it without the team getting the result we wanted,” he wrote.

Defeat took off some glory off what as a crowning moment for Mejbri, but the Tunisian can be happy with himself for what has been an incredible September so far.

During the international break, he featured twice for Tunisia as they beat Botswana and Egypt 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

Brighton mock Man United

Sports Brief also reported on Brighton and Hove Albion’s message immediately after beating Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Seagulls are accustomed to winning at the Theatre of Dreams, as they are the only team to have beaten United at the stadium in the last 33 games played at the facility.

Given this impressive milestone, Brighton could not resist the urge to mock United on social media.

The Seagulls shared a cheeky message on X, formerly, Twitter, with the caption:

"Back to back @PremierLeague wins here. We just love playing at Old Trafford. 🥰👏"
