  • Victor Osimhen has a huge task of beating Rashidi Yekini's goalscoring record for Nigeria
  • The Super Eagles striker reacts to claims that he is only focused on challenging the all-time record
  • The Napoli striker has a better goal ratio compared to others on the top-scoring chart

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is edging closer to Nigeria's all-time scoring record, set by the legendary Rashidi Yekini.

The Napoli star is presently fourth on the all-time top scorer list for the Super Eagles with 20 goals in just 27 matches but faces a huge task in taking the top spot from Yekini who has 37 goals in 58 games.

The likes of Segun Odegbami, and Yakubu Ayegbeni are still ahead of Osimhen on the top scorer chart, but the Napoli striker has a better scoring ratio.

Speaking to the media after bagging a hat trick against Sao Tome and Principe, the Super Eagles striker claims he doesn't think he can challenge Yekini for the top spot, according to Soccernet.

“I don’t think I can challenge the great, the legend Rashidi Yekini because he’s done so well for the country, for the Super Eagles, and to be able to try to follow in his footsteps is a huge one for me,” he said.
“But I think I have the ability to try to meet up with his numbers and to try to help the team as much as I can. I think I'm ready to go. I’m ready.”

The former Lille striker also claimed that he has a lot of players in the team who can support him, but he is not solely focused on breaking the record.

“I’ve got a lot of players that can also help and support me. So, for me, I’m ready to give my all for the team. If I surpass the goal record, I pass it; if I equal it, I equal it, but I really don’t think about that. I just want to get as many goals as I can score for the team, which is the most important thing,” he added.

The former Wolfsburg striker finished as the top scorer of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with 10 goals.

Osimhen fourth on Nigeria's scoring chart

Sports Brief earlier reported that Victor Osimhen is now the fourth all-time top scorer for Nigeria, with 20 goals in just 27 matches.

The former Lille striker still has a high hill to climb, as he is still behind the all-time record holder, Rashidi Yekini.

The late legend still holds the record for most goals scored for the Nigerian men's national team, with 37 goals from 62 appearances, Khel Now reports.
