  • Harry Maguire was the biggest talking point after England's friendly clash vs. Scotland
  • The Man United defender started from the bench, only to score an own goal shortly after he came on
  • The match ended in a 3-1 win for the Three Lions, with Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden finding the back of the net

Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale has leapt to Harry Maguire's defence following criticism from fans after he scored an own goal while in action for England.

Maguire, who has endured a difficult start to the new season, especially at the club level, was part of the England squad that played Scotland in a friendly clash in Glasgow on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United centre-back started the match from the bench, with Chelsea ace Marc Guehi starting ahead of him.

According to The Guardian, Maguire was subbed on in the second half of the tie, replacing Guehi shortly after the break.

However, the former Leicester City defender found himself in trouble minutes later after he guided Andy Robertson’s low cross past Ramsdale to give Scotland a lifeline.

Ramsdale defends Maguire

Maguire's own goal sparked reactions from fans, with rival supporters making fun of the embattled United star.

Ramsdale has now come out to defend his fellow countryman, with the Arsenal shot-stopper shielding him from criticism.

"I can sympathise with him in a way because I’ve been at the other end of the Premier League fighting to stay up, been relegated twice," Ramsdale said when asked about Maguire.
"If he was playing week in, week out, or if this noise wasn’t around and he scored an own goal it probably would have been brushed under the carpet.
"He’s tried to do the right thing, clear it, and it’s gone in. It’s unfortunate," he added, via Metro UK.

How Maguire can break into United XI

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Erik ten Hag giving a concise answer when asked whether Maguire has a future at Old Trafford following a botched move to West Ham United.

The embattled centre-back had a whirlwind few months that saw him stripped of the United captaincy and fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford last season.

West Ham reportedly agreed a fee of £30 million to sign the defender, only for these talks to stall amid Maguire’s apparent unwillingness to move to the East London club.
