  • Paul Pogba has reportedly told Juventus he did not know what was in the food supplements he took
  • The midfielder is currently suspended after he failed a drug test in August
  • If found guilty, he could be banned for up to four years

Paul Pogba's case has taken a fresh twist after he reportedly admitted to having taken food supplements that are now the genesis of his new problems.

The Juventus midfielder was suspended provisionally by Italian authorities after he texted positive for high levels of testosterone.

The said test was conducted on August 12 during their game against Udinese - a game the former Manchester United star did not feature in.

ESPN now reports that Pogba has admitted to Juventus that he took food supplements that he was not aware had the banned substances.

The offence carries a ban of up to four years if found guilty, with the World Cup-winning midfielder now staring at the possibility of an enforced 'early retirement.'

His French teammates, led by coach Didier Deschamps, have thrown their weight behind him.

"I can't imagine that, knowing him, with everything that is in his head. I still remember certain discussions with him on the vaccine and Covid. The substance there is, but afterwards, unless there is a second opinion. It's hard for him. I have always supported him," said Deschamps, as quoted by GOAL.

Pogba has until the end of this week to file an appeal and provide evidence to disapprove the earlier tests.

Longest bans in football's history

The French star now faces a ban of up to four years if found guilty of the offence. Such bans, though rare in football, have happened in the past.

Sports Brief takes a look at some of the most famous players who were suspended for lengthy periods.

Argentina's legend, Diego Maradona, leads the list after he served two 15-month bans in 1991 and 1994.

Sports Brief also reported on Pogba destroying teammate Joseph Nonge with his brilliant skills during training, then sharing the clip on Instagram, and also tagging the 18-year-old.

The piece of football artistry he displayed has hinted he is close to returning from injury. On his day, the Frenchman is one of the world's most technically gifted midfielders.
