Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro has revealed why he decided to take a pay cut and extend his contract with the Nigeria national team.
The Portuguese manager signed a new contract a few days before Nigeria's final Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe.
NFF reached an agreement with the former FC Porto coach to slash his salary and continue with the Super Eagles.
In the game against the Falcons and True Parrots, the Super Eagles thrashed the visitors 6-0, with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Samuel Chukwueze all being on the scoresheet.
With 15 points gathered in the qualifying series, Nigeria sealed the top spot in Group A, while Guinea Bissau settled for second place with 13 points. Both countries will be in the competition in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
During an interview with Brila FM as per Complete Sports, Peseiro claimed that the reason behind his decision to take a pay cut and continue as Nigeria's coach was that he wanted to win the 2023 AFCON title.
“Me and my staff did everything in order to stay here to train these players and reach the big goal, win the AFCON title,” he said.
The former FC Porto manager's new contract will last for six months and it is expected to expire at the end of the 2023 AFCON.
