  • Barcelona have taken on what is perhaps a sentimental initiative
  • The Catalan club have begun the sale of its stadium grass in mini Camp Nou replicas
  • Fans have reacted differently with some trolling the La Liga champions

Barcelona’s financial situation has not improved much since President Joan Laporta took over the reins in March 2021.

The La Liga giants have undertaken what some could perceive to be a fundraising initiative or a sentimental initiative for supporters of the club who long for Camp Nou.

Barcelona are in the process of selling sections of grass from their famous Camp Nou Stadium which is currently undergoing renovations.

According to reports from Goal, the prices from the sale of grass from Camp Nou vary, with prices ranging from €50 to €420 per piece.

This curious initiative comes shortly after 90mins reported that the La Liga champions are actively exploring the option of rivalling Real Madrid for the signature of Manchester City’s star player, Erling Haaland.

The connection could be farfetched as the club would surely need more than what they could possibly get in revenue from this initiative but it serves the football fraternity with some humour as some have taken to social media to express their reactions with much funfair.

“What is this broke club doing 😂”

@ItzEliInit responded:

“it is not because we are broke...we want the fans to have a feel of the club and feel close to the club”

It should be noted that Barcelona are not the only European club to have a portion of the club’s grass on sale as both Real Madrid and city rivals Atletico Madrid all have had a piece of their club's grass up for sale.

Basque Republic club Athletic Bilbao also have a piece of the iconic San Mames on sale for the fans.

Barca borrows money to fund Camp Nou

Sports Brief earlier reported on Barcelona borrowing €1.45 billion to finance the modernization of Camp Nou.

The Catalans will play at the Olympic Stadium for two seasons as renovation work begins at the end of the 2022/23 season, with the project to be completed by November 2024.

The project, termed Espai Barca, will cost the Catalan club a total of €1.45 billion in loans, which will be paid back over the next 24 years if everything goes according to plan.
