Super Eagles star, Jamilu Collins has fired a warning to other countries ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Paderborn left-back was one of the players in the Super Eagles squad that thrashed Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The three-time champions will compete with 24 other teams in the tournament in 2024.
Collins, during an interview with Complete Sports, fired warnings to opponents ahead of the competition, claiming he strongly believed the Super Eagles can win it.
“I strongly believe we can win the trophy in Cote d’Ivoire. We started well the last time in Cameroon, but unfortunately, we couldn’t go far,” he said.
The Cardiff defender went further to admit that it won't be an easy task, but they would work hard to achieve it.
“Next year in Cote d’Ivoire, we want things to be better. We will be aiming for the trophy and I strongly believe we can win it. It’s not going to be an easy task but we will work hard to achieve our objective,” he added.
Nigeria have won the competition three times, with the last one coming in 2013.
The 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast is scheduled to take place between January 13 and February 11 next year.
Nigeria thrash Sao Tome and Principe
Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigeria have sealed qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Ivory Coast in January following a 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in the final qualifying match.
Heading into this fixture, Jose Peseiro's side had confirmed their place in next year's Africa Cup of Nations tournament, but they still needed to guarantee top spot in Group A of the qualifying series.
With 15 points, Nigeria finished top of Group A in the qualifying series, and Guinea Bissau were second with 10. Sierra Leone are on 5, while Sao Tome and Principe are rock bottom with just one point.
