  • Gennaro Gattuso is close to becoming Olympique Lyon's new manager
  • Lyon fired Laurent Blanc following a poor start to the 2023/24 season
  • Gattusso coached Valencia before he was sacked in January this year

Olympique Lyon are close to appointing AC Milan and Italy legend, Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager a day after parting ways with Laurent Blanc.

Lyon have made a dreadful start to the season and sit bottom of Ligue 1 with just one point from four matches.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, the former Napoli, Milan, and Valencia manager will replace Blanc, who was appointed in October last year.

Lyon failed to win a single match in pre-season and the 4-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain proved to be the last straw.

This season, they have lost three and drawn one in Ligue 1. Les Gones play promoted side, Le Havre at home on Sunday in their next fixture.

After the defeat to PSG, Lyon's ultras berated the players in a moment that went viral on social media, per the Guardian.

Gattuso brings experience

In January this year, Gattuso was fired by Valencia despite signing a two-year deal last summer. He left the Spanish side 14th in La Liga after five wins in their first 18 games.

He played as a defensive midfielder in his career and won the 2006 World Cup with Italy and two Champions League titles with AC Milan. He coached Napoli and AC Milan, achieving moderate success.

Therefore, if appointed, Gattuso will bring bags of experience to the seven-time French champions. He will be tasked with rejuvenating the players who struggled in Blanc's conservative style of play.

Blanc has won Ligue 1 five times with PSG and Girondins Bordeaux.

Gattuso quits after 23 days

Previously, Sports Brief reported on former Napoli manager, Gattuso quitting as Fiorentina coach after just 23 days.

He was the coach of the Serie A side but reportedly came to be at loggerheads with the management of the club.

Gattuso was reportedly keen on bringing in players the club couldn't afford and was unhappy with those they could.
