FootballEuro 2024: Ronaldo’s Portugal Near Qualification After Putting Luxembourg to the Sword
- Portugal are on the brink of Euro 2024 qualification
- The Selecao put nine goals past a hapless Luxembourg to maintain their 100% qualification record
- Victory in their next game against Slovakia will confirm their spot in Germany
Portugal are on the cusp of being the first nation to qualify for the 2024 Euros in the wake of their comprehensive victory against minnows Luxembourg on Monday, September 11.
Despite the absence of their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was sidelined due to accumulated yellow cards, the 2016 European champions made light work of their opponents at the Estadio Algarve.
A pair of goals from Goncalo Inacio, as well as braces from PSG forward Goncalo Ramos and Liverpool's Diogo Jota, were complemented by solitary goals from Bruno Fernandes, Ricardo Horta, and Joao Felix, resulting in a resounding 9-0 win under Roberto Martinez's leadership, Sky Sports reports.
The victory establishes Portugal as the only team in the qualifiers with a perfect record after six games, having won all their matches and scored an impressive 24 goals.
For good measure, this achievement puts the Iberian country on the verge of securing its ticket to next year's competition, which Germany will host in the summer.
When will Portugal qualify?
According to BBC, Portugal are on the verge of securing qualification for Euro 2024 in Germany, with three matches to spare, provided they emerge victorious against second-placed Slovakia on October 13th. Additionally, their qualification hinges on third-placed Luxembourg failing to secure a victory in their away match against Iceland.
Ronaldo sets new record
Meanwhile, Ronaldo reached a remarkable milestone after Portugal's momentous win against Luxembourg.
This victory not only earned them a place in next year's competition in Germany but also etched Ronaldo's name in history as the first player to qualify for his sixth UEFA European Championship.
