According to Metro UK, Gabriel was part of the starting XI as Brazil demolished Bolivia 5-1 in the first game of the World Cup qualifiers.

However, the Brazil international was unable to see out the rest of the match as he was forced off in the closing stages of the game.

Gabriel was later spotted on the bench with an ice pack strapped to his right thigh, with the extent of his injury still unknown.

Gabriel's struggles at Arsenal

Gabriel's injury setback came at a time when he has endured a difficult start to the new season with the Gunners.

The defender has managed just one start in Arsenal's four Premier League matches of the new season.

The Brazilian lost his place to Jurrien Timber, who joined the north Londoners from Ajax this summer in a deal worth £38m per Sky Sports.

However, with Timber currently injured, Gabriel was expected to feature more regularly after the international break.

Mikel Arteta has since commented on the defender's situation and was quoted saying:

"Gabi will play a lot of games, I’m sure and it’s about bringing the competition high and try to make the team play better, better, better and better and be more dominant and win more games. That’s the purpose of all of us."
