  • Cristiano Ronaldo set another record with his participation for Portugal during the game

Portugal secured yet another one-nil victory on the road against Slovakia, maintaining their perfect streak of consecutive wins as they inch closer to securing a place in the 2024 Euro tournament in Germany.

Roberto Martinez’s side, who were made to labour in their Group J encounter, were bailed out courtesy of a goal in minute 43 from Bruno Fernandes, who had celebrated his birthday only a day before.

While the match was decided by the goal of the Manchester United midfielder, the spotlight was again heralded by his countryman and captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, who reached a new milestone in international football with his participation in the victory.

Ronaldo reaches new international milestone

The Portuguese captain, who donned the Selecao shirt for the 201st time, reached a new milestone as he surpassed former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper, Iker Casillas as the second player with the second-most international wins in men’s football.

According to a report by 90min, the Al-Nassr captain is now within touching distance of former teammate, Sergio Ramos, who recently announced his retirement from international football, as reported by Goal.

Ronaldo currently sits second on the all-time list with 122 wins, only 10 behind his former Real Madrid teammate.

The veteran will have to endure a wait before usurping Ramos as the player with the most wins ever, after an accumulation of yellow cards which will see him miss his nation’s next game against Luxembourg on September 11.

Ronaldo hailed as Saudi youth role model

Sports Brief previously reported on the newly appointed Director of Football for the Saudi Pro League, Michael Emenalo praising Cristiano Ronaldo as being ‘more than just a footballer’.

While the veteran's on-field performance continues to capture the attention, his work ethic and lifestyle have also established him as a role model for the Saudi youth, as noted by Emenalo.
