- Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has weighed in on the young midfielder’s surprise transfer
Gabri Veiga’s move from Celta Vigo in La Liga to Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League stands out as one of the most unexpected transfers of the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old Spanish sensation had a remarkable season with Celta Vigo, playing a pivotal role in their successful campaign in La Liga, where he scored 11 goals, including two against a water-tight Barcelona defence.
Veiga’s outstanding performances quickly drew attention from top clubs in La Liga and across Europe, sparking transfer speculation.
Surprisingly, despite reportedly agreeing to a transfer with Italian champions Napoli, Veiga made a surprising decision to join Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, as reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The announcement of his move to the Saudi club was marred by critical comments from German midfielder Toni Kroos, who described the transfer as “embarrassing.”
However, it’s worth noting that Kroos’ Real Madrid teammate, Dani Carvajal, expressed a different perspective on the midfielder’s decision in a recent interview.
Carvajal speaks on Veiga transfer
Ahead of Spain’s crucial Euro qualification tie against Georgia, the 31-year-old Carvajal spoke to Spanish outlet Diario AS, highlighting several happenings of the new season so far, including the transfer of Veiga to the Saudi League.
“He is barely 21 years old. I understand it perfectly when you receive a lucrative offer.
When I went to Germany, I signed a contract for five years and the first thing I did was buy a house for my parents.
I come from a humble neighbourhood, so I get his decision.”
The grip of the Suadi Pro League on several of Europe’s elite stars has translated into a flurry of high-profile players transferring to the Middle East.

Sports Brief also reported on Al-Ahli focusing on Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul after Napoli's Piotr Zielinski rejected them.
The Saudi Pro League side have reportedly opened talks to sign the Argentina star after their pursuit of the Polish international collapsed.
De Paul moved to Spain in 2021 for €35 million from Italian side Udinese and Atletico would need some convincing to let a key player go.
