- Mason Mount incurred the wrath of Chelsea fans when he joined Manchester United
- The club and player couldn't agree on terms for a new contract, leading the player to leave
- Former captain John Terry has defended the academy star amidst continuous criticism from fans
Legendary Chelsea captain John Terry is out there shielding a former academy star who departed the club and joined a rival amidst continuous fan backlash.
The club had a long spell of academy stars not breaking into the first team after Terry. The barrier was properly broken after Frank Lampard debuted eight stars from Cobham during his first spell.
Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are some who broke into the team during Lampard's era, but only James remains at the club now.
Mount had a contractual dispute while trying to extend his deal, forcing the club to sell him to rivals Manchester United for £60m, including add-ons, as reported by The Athletic.
John Terry defends Mason Mount
Mount has yet to settle in at United, and his former fans have kept a close eye on him to mock his performances at his new club over claims he betrayed them by joining a rival.
Speaking to Simon Philips ahead of the Legends of Europe game between Chelsea and Bayern Munich, the former captain claimed things happened behind the scenes that led to his departure.
“Mase is proper Chels through and through. There are always two sides to a story, and I know the other side to it. I’m not going to air that tonight, but there’s another side to the story. Let’s not be too harsh on Mason when he comes back,” Terry said.
Fans have revolted against the comments and disagreed with their legend despite his privileged access to more information than they do. They added that he is not welcomed back at the Bridge.
