Romelu Lukaku joined AS Roma on a season-long loan because he wanted to leave Chelsea, and the idea of working with Jose Mourinho fascinated him, but an AC Milan legend expects more from him in Rome than just a getaway.
Lukaku has been in a chaotic relationship with Chelsea since he rejoined the Blues for £97.5m after helping Inter Milan win the 2020/21 Italian Serie A title. He was named the league's MVP ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
He spent last season on loan and was expected to join permanently, but a last-minute turnaround from the Belgian after the clubs agreed to the deal ensured it collapsed.
Italian giants Juventus were also interested in a permanent move for him, but The Telegraph claimed another last-minute decision by Lukaku collapsed the deal after the Old Lady took too long as they were trying to offload Dusan Vlahovic.
Lukaku tipped to win title for Roma
Roma have finished sixth in consecutive seasons since Mourinho arrived at the club in 2021. Giallorossi won the UEFA Europa Conference League in his first season and lost the Europa League final last season.
The thought that they could be Serie A champions under the Special One this season is one that the fans are certainly not conceiving, but AC Milan legend Filippo Inzaghi thinks the striker's arrival could have that effect.
“Lukaku’s effect on Roma could be the same as the one he had in that city Batistuta. Do you remember it? The push towards the championship was dictated precisely by the arrival of the Argentine. The square lit up, and also the team,” he told Il Messaggero.

Pellegrini questions Lukaku's move
Sports Brief reported that Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini questioned Lukaku's transfer to the club when the circulation grew that the former Manchester United player was heading to Rome.
Pellegrini did not doubt the Belgian's ability as a player but was unsure what he would bring to the team and would rather wait and see before making a conclusion.
