FootballWhy Messi, Neymar, Mbappe Flopped as a Trio at Paris Saint Germain According to Former Director
- Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe ultimately failed as a partnership at PSG
- An ex-sporting director of the Ligue 1 giants has tried to explain why this happened
- Messi and Neymar have since departed the club with Mbappe in his last year in Paris
Former Paris Saint-Germain official, Leonardo has attempted to explain why Lionel Messi, Neymar Junior, and Kylian Mbappe failed to thrive as a trio during their tenure at the French club.
Leonardo, who served as head coach and later as the sporting director, believes the Ligue 1 champions did not implement the right strategies to fully harness the potential of the superstar trio.
In 2021, the reigning French champions assembled what was anticipated to be the most formidable attack in Europe and - to a significant extent - in the history of football, with Messi the final piece of the puzzle, GOAL reports.
Unfortunately, the star-studded trio fell short of the lofty expectations placed upon them due to several factors, including the well-documented absence of a well-balanced team to complement their offensive efforts.
Currently, only Mbappe remains from the formidable attacking trio at PSG, with the Frenchman entering the final year of his current contract.
Meanwhile, Neymar made a move to the Middle East, joining Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia after signing a lucrative contract.
Messi, on the other hand, chose to turn down the Saudi Pro League and instead joined David Beckham's MLS franchise, Inter Miami.
Reflecting on their time in Paris, Leonardo disclosed how the club failed to effectively support the star trio in achieving their collective goals.
"People, they need to feel comfortable. These players need a state of good spirits. They need to feel support and they need to be recognised. And the ones who have to do that are the club, us, and the coaches,” Leonardo told Brazilian publication, Globo as quoted by Daily Post.
