  • Arsenal went into the international break on a high after defeating Manchester United 3-1
  • In a game full of twists and turns, United thought they had won it late on thanks to Alejandro Garnacho
  • But the Argentine saw his goal ruled out for offside, and keen analysis shows how Arsenal defender Gabriel saved his side

Arsenal will have their defender Gabriel to thank for a genius piece of play that potentially saved his side from defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

A thriller of a game on Sunday, September 3, ended in a 3-1 win for the Gunners, who came from behind thanks to goals from Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Jesus.

However, one unsung hero was Gabriel Magalhaes, who returned to Mikel Arteta’s starting XI after getting snubbed for the opening three fixtures.

The Brazilian has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates all summer, but it appears he could still be a key player for Arteta, whose side is back in the Champions League.

Gabriel saves Arsenal

Thomas Partey’s injury meant Gabriel partnered with William Saliba at centre-back as Ben White reverted to right-back. The 25-year-old was keen to show Arteta why he deserved a shot and he did so in an odd but brilliant way.

As cited on Evening Standard, towards the 90th minute on Sunday, Alejandro Garnacho broke free from a through ball and slotted home past Aaron Ramsdale to swing the clash 2-1 in United’s favour.

Replays, however, showed that Garnacho was marginally offside, as Gabriel had pumped the brakes on his run just at the right time.

Shots of the offside call have since gone viral on social media, and it showed Gabriel making the famous 'lean', which is widely associated with late pop icon, Michael Jackson.

The late pop star did the famous tilt during the music video for his hit song Smooth Criminal, and according to Times of Malta, he was able to defy gravity thanks to the use of special shoes.

Back to Arsenal, and the Gunners went on to score two late goals after Garnacho’s goal was ruled out for offside to claim all three points and move within two points of league leaders Manchester City.

How offside lines work

Sports Brief also reported on how offside lines work after Garnacho’s goal was ruled out for offside.

According to the Premier League, the officials use the hawk-eye’s virtual offside line technology to arrive at decisions. This technology is broken down into the gridline and the crosshair.

The former is straightforward, with a line being drawn on the last defender. Any opposing player who is over the line headed towards the goal is deemed offside.

But at times, like in Garnacho's case, the gridline fails to outrightly differentiate whether the attacking player is over the line or in a perfect and legal position - enter the crosshair.
