- Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi, and three other senior players missing from the Super Eagles squad for the Sao Tome and Principe clash
- Jose Peseiro named a strong squad for the tie, despite the absence of some top players
- Nigeria need just one point to seal top spot in Group A ahead of second-placed Guinea-Bissau
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro shunned Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi and a few others in his 23-man squad list for the final game of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round against Sao Tome and Principe.
The omission of Iwobi, Musa and three other senior players drew reactions from Nigerian football fans despite the tie being a dead rubber game.
Nigeria has already booked a place in next year's competition taking place in Ivory Coast but needs a point to seal the top spot in the group ahead of second-placed Guinea-Bissau.
According to reports on OwnGoal Nigeria, there is a reason behind the omission of the five senior players from the squad to face Sao Tome and Principe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Musa, who is the captain of the Nigeria National team, was not available for selection after picking up a knock in his first league game this season.
The former Leicester City winger was forced off in the 64th minute and didn't recover in time to make the Super Eagles squad for their last AFCON qualifiers.
Iwobi also found himself in the same situation. He recently sealed a move from Everton to Fulham, but he is not up for selection due to injury.
Former Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo was also missing from the list because he was suspended for the game, while Fenerbahce defender Bright Osayi Samuel is missing due to injury.
FC Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi, who is also a regular in the Nigeria National Team, is also ruled out of the tie due to injury.
