FootballAndre Onana: Cameroon Recall Manchester United Goalkeeper Ahead of AFCON Qualifier Showdown
- Andre Onana has earned his place back in the Cameroon national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers
- The Manchester United goalkeeper is needed for the all-important tie against Burundi
- Onana could make the difference for the Indomitable Lions against the Swallows
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have recalled Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana ahead of their must-win Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi.
The former Ajax goalkeeper had previously retired from international football after having a tactical disagreement with the national team coach, Rigobert Song, during their opening game against Switzerland at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Manchester United goalkeeper released an official statement yesterday, 4th of September 2023, that he is back in the Cameroon national team set-up.
According to The Punch, the five-time AFCON champions need all three points against the Swallows of Burundi to book a place in the 2023 Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
In the reverse fixture, Cameroon defeated the Swallows 1-0 courtesy of a lone strike from former Villarreal striker Karl Toko Ekambi.
Cameroon are in Group C alongside Burundi, Namibia, and Kenya, but the latter were disqualified, leaving just three countries in the group.
Cameroon put themselves in a tight situation of booking a place in the tournament after earning just one point in their double-legged tie against Namibia.
Onana's performances since being ousted from the national team have been impressive and he deserves to be recalled.
The former Inter Milan star could make a difference for the Indomitable Lions after their coach claimed that their backs are against the wall due to the tight situation they found themselves in.
