  • Greenwood entered his first training session with the Azulones this week

Mason Greenwood has quickly won over the hearts of Getafe fans after his season-long loan transfer from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

Greenwood, who had been out of action for 18 months, made a surprising move to the Madrid-based club after the English giants chose to not reintegrate him into their first-team squad.

This decision came after the 21-year-old faced charges including assault and coercion in January last year, leading to his exclusion from the Red Devils' squad.

However, by February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence, granting him the opportunity to make his comeback to football.

His return, however, will take place in the Spanish top tier after Getafe signed him on loan, the BBC reports.

The club's decision to bring Greenwood on board was met with jubilation from the fanbase. To add to the excitement, supporters flocked to the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez where he joined his new teammates for a walkout.

Sporting Getafe's training attire, the Englishman emerged from the tunnel amidst cheers and chants, as captured in a video shared by the club's official Twitter account.

Greenwood's first statement as Getafe player

Sports Brief also reported on Greenwood addressing the public for the first time since completing his transfer to Getafe on the summer transfer window deadline day.

Upon his temporary move to Spain with the La Liga side, the forward conveyed a message to the club's devoted fans in a video shared on their official social media page.

Sporting a smile during the video, Greenwood confidently showcased the team's home jersey while standing next to a larger-than-life version of their club emblem.

Getafe told to sack Greenwood

Greenwood's transfer to Getafe also stirred controversy, with a Spanish charity focused on fighting domestic abuse asking the club to reconsider the signing.

In under a week after finalising the transfer of the ex-Man United striker, the La Liga club has come under intense scrutiny, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

The Ana Bella Foundation, a domestic abuse charity in Spain, has officially requested that the club reassess their decision to bring in the English youngster.
